The Incredible Mind of Jamaal Howard
Essays from His Final Days
by Jeff Hood
Published 2026
A portrait of a mind the state scheduled to destroy. Written from Jeff Hood's time with Jamaal Howard in his final days, these essays refuse to let an execution have the last word on the person it killed.
Collected from what Howard said, wrote, and wondered in the time the state left him, The Incredible Mind of Jamaal Howard is both memorial and argument: proof of what is lost every time the country proceeds.
Proceeds from this book fund the Execution Intervention Project — legal work, clemency campaigns, and direct support for people on death row.
